Nevada Yacht Club’s Relationship with Maritime Explorer Club
Nevada Yacht Club (NYC) has promised a commitment to youth training. Sea Scouts have a commitment to youth training. Goals of both organizations converge. There is a compelling reason for making their resources converge. That convergence would be a Maritime Explorer Club sponsored by NYC.
Nevada Yacht Club is chartered to engage in education. We actively encourage the public to participate in sailing education. The NYC 501c3 nonprofit status encourages public education. We strive to do this effectively. The members of NYC have a significant amounts of experience to contribute to a youth program. NYC can provide resources including boats and safety to educate the young of Nevada. The club is dedicated to be inclusive as possible for membership.

Sea Scout Ship 40 is located in Henderson NV. They have approximately seven youth membership. There is vetted leadership in ship 40. Background checks and double coverage are mandatory. There are at least two boats in the Ship 40 program. There are four leaders in their program that are willing to assist in NYC activities. Sea Scouts have over a century of experience leading future leaders. The Scouts of America have a serious commitment to Youth Protection. Sea Scouts have been inclusive since 1977. Scouts of America has a recruiting program that includes both boys and girls in Junior High and High school. They emphasize seamanship leadership and safety. They have a leadership development program that could come to fruition as a career in the United States Coast Guard.
The symbiosis part. An NYC sponsored explorer club under the Scouts of America would allow the sponsoring organization greater control over the program. Sea Scouts Posts have an age minimum and maximum range range, 13-20, NYC wants an expanded age group, we would like to include a younger group as well. Sea Scouts have access to paddle boards and canoes. NYC has access to experience and sailboats. The classroom facilities at the BSA paradise office are quite impressive. NYC has limited facilities. NYC has some money and boats with enthusiastic instructors. Sponsorship implies a commitment of experience and sharing of resources. Sea Scout posts have a regimented uniform, an NYC sponsored explorer club could reduce the student costs to a bare minimum. The merging of resources and talent could be a prescription for a really significant contribution to our community.
Cost to the NYC is minimal. Forty dollars a year for club registration. Forty dollars a year club insurance. Adult leaders will pay for their own registration fees of $33 per year. We can do fundraisers to cover these expenses. Volunteers can run Sail Training II for graduates of Sail Training I. Our Vice Commodore elect has volunteered to run spinnaker training with proceeds going to the youth program. Then there are always car washes.
What is the time of commitment? We pay for one year, if we wish to stop, we stop, plain and simple. If the yacht club wishes to dissolve the explorer club another sponsor can be found. It would result in a dilution of resources for all. This is a volunteer effort. If we have no volunteers it dissolves just like previous efforts. This year we have had sufficient support of volunteers, that is projected to continue.
Involvement. It is really up to us. We could have a few on the water events. Other clubs and posts have a rigorous schedule of offerings. We can let kids sail on NYC volunteers boats. There are many academic activities to engage in when not on the water. We might ask the kids what they want to make of the club. An outline of activities has been written as a starting place for new ideas.
The scouts have a really excellent guide at their website. Please take the time to peruse these resources.
